If all you want to do is image your system or data, then Macrium Reflect Free 6 is a great way to do it. And much better than the six invoked by Acronis True Image. On the bright side, the free version of Reflect spawns only a single background process, down from the three that the pay versions create. Backup generally takes place during off hours or in the background, so we don’t lend performance a lot of weight in our evaluations. That’s about two minutes slower than any of the competition, though CPU usage was minimal. That might be nice, as Reflect Free 6 took just over nine minutes to perform our 115GB system backup. Macrium claims increased performance for the latest version 7, of which a free version is promised soon.

Cloning your device will keep all your information intact, just in case the data on your PC is stolen or lost. If you prefer super reliable backups, then a solution that supports offline backups might be a better choice. Macrium Reflect Free clones your hard drive to another piece of hardware. However, when I started a system that I restored with Macrium Reflect, I saw the Windows Recovery Error screen, which worried me a little. Like Macrium Reflect, there is a fully-functional, free version of AOMEI that lets you create system images, back up hard drives, and clone drives. Live backups of running system are usually no problem, though.

It lacks some features of the full versions, such as. An unsupported free edition is available for home and commercial use. The tool's second downside is that it doesn't allow you to run backups from its boot disk. A central management console is available which enables scheduling, restore and monitoring of multiple networked computers running Macrium Reflect using a Web browser user interface. Thus if you have to back up Linux file systems (e.g., Ext2/3FS), you might benefit from the fact that Macrium Reflect uses sector-based imaging. The main advantage of sector-based imaging is that it often is file system independent. Other features include mounting and exploring of backup images, optional compression, a built-in scheduler for automated backups and creation of recovery media.
However, this is just my subjective view and I can't give any hard facts to support it. Macrium Reflect Free Edition can backup your system partition from within Windows by taking advantage of the Volume Shadow Copy service. I have found them to be less reliable and sometimes slower than file-based imaging tools (despite the fact that they often are marketed to be faster). Somehow, however, my experience with sector-based imaging tools is not really good. I have been using imaging solutions since Windows NT 4, so you can imagine that I have seen quite a few different tools in the past 10 years or so. First of all, it is a sector-based imaging tool. This software is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP, and Vista. The interface is easy to understand and the buttons are easy to click. Macrium Reflect also has a few downsides, though. Also, Macrium Reflect free version has a command-line interface that can be used to create and restore images. You can mount backup images to drive letters, which is the feature I miss most in Windows Vista's system backup tool. It supports scheduling, CD/DVD writing, verification, MBR backup, file system integrity check and network backups. It has all the important feature of a backup imaging tool. Macrium Reflect's user interface also made a better impression on me than DriveImageXMLs. Best of all is that no extra download, installation or configuration is required because the ISO file is already included in the Macrium Reflect download. The ISO image is only 7MB and boots up very quickly compared to BartPE or UBCD4Win.
